FULL HULL KIT INSTRUCTIONS

REQUIRED TOOLS & SUPPLIES
  • X-Acto knife
  • drill bits are required only for kits that have not been pre-drilled:
    - 0.024 inch/0.61 mm drill bit (#73)
    - 1/16 inch/1.5 mm drill bit
    - vise for small drill bits
    - drill bits up to about 1/4"/5 mm and hand drill drill
  • small files; you should have a very thin round file with no more than 2 mm diameter. You may be able to use your X-Acto knife instead.
  • tweezers
  • small flush cutter/snips/scissors for cutting brass rods and wires
  • contour putty or Bondo filler, Bondo is better and cheaper. You can get it at any automotive parts store. Read the instructions and safety warning on the Bondo.
  • 220/320/400 grit sandpaper, possibly sanding sticks
  • C/A glue (krazy glue); I prefer Zap-A-Gap (green bottle).
  • epoxy resin; I prefer clear 5 minute epoxy resin; there are various brands that all work well; I prefer Bob Smith's 5 Minute clear resin.
  • toothpicks for applying glue and resin
  • paint: your guess is as good as mine or better. I suggest dark grey for all armor plating and light tan (”faded wood”) for the deck and top of the casemate. Many confederate ships may have been painted very dark or may have been rusty, making them blend will with the muddy river water. Keep in mind that these coal-powered ships were very grimy and sooty. For the anchors, davits and ensign staff I suggest flat black or dark grey.
  • small brushes and or airbrush
  • solvent, for example acetone/denatured alcohol/nailpolish remover
  • paper napkins, small rags, Q-tips
