fully
functional micro sundial is crafted from non-magnetic white metal and
brass. The gnomon is spring-dampened, so the gnomon will stay upright
or folded down. The sundial has been calibrated to a specific latitude
of your choice (25, 30, 35, 37, 40, 45, 50, 55, 60 degree North). With the inbuilt, undampened compass, I achieve an accuracy of +/-30 minutes. What can you do with it? You can tell the time between 6 AM and 6PM if the sun is shining. You can use the compass for finding North, but an additional precision compass is highly recommended. How accurately can it tell the time? By using a good quality handheld compass, without much effort an accuracy of +/- 15 minutes or better is obtainable. Between 11AM and 1PM accuracy may be less due to the difficulty of reading the dial at that time. How does it basically work? Our Sun rotates around the North Star (Celestial Pole) and this rotation allows us to use the Sun to tell time. During the day the North Staris of course invisible to us, but we can easily find it. The North Star is due North, up from the horizon exactly an angle equal to your latitude. The gnomon, a staff or sail, on your sundial corresponds to your latitude. Hold the sundial level to the ground and use the inbuilt compass to orient the sundial with the gnomon pointing exactly to Magnetic North. The sundial's gomon aims straight at the North Star, the Northern Celestial Pole. The sunlight will hit the gnomon and cast a shadow line that falls on the sundials dial, which is calibrated to a particular latitude. The reading tells Solar Time. Further, more elaborate instructions that include topics like compensating for declination and longitude, and the Equation of Time, included with each sundial. |
